Through various sponsors a number of scholarships (amounting in 1949 to the grand total of £500!) were offered annually to pupils attending South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire area schools in order to "encourage wider education, travel and create a deeper appreciation of nations who are our friends of the British Commonwealth". During 1949 Firth Park Grammar School's Anthony Heathcote was lucky enough to attend a Travelling Scholarship to Paris for two weeks between 2 - 18 August... download the whole 20-page itinerary here.
